Soda or Pop?

As a native of Southern California currently living in Oregon, I have been engaged in the ongoing and ever so important debate, just what do you call your favorite carbonated beverage....soda, pop, or coke? It now seems that depends on what part of the country you live in, and even what county!

Growing up in So Cal we simply called all carbonated drinks coke, even if it was a Spirte, although that seems to have changed according to the map. Well, that doesn't fly in Oregon. For the most part it is pop, and sometimes soda.

Check out this map to settle the controversy once and for all! Visit www.popvssoda.com for an even more detailed and interactive map.

Whew...sure glad that is settled!

Growing up in Arkansas, everything was coke, and that is what everyone said. Now, in Washington I get taken literally. So if I tell students we are going to stop for a coke, they want to know why they can't get whatever they want. It's funny.

Okay. When I lived in Michigan it was "pop". I have a friend from Ohio that still calls it "pop". Sounds funny now. I used to say "soda" here in florida as well as "pop" but now I have just resorted to "coke" which is intersting when you go into a place that serves Pepsi. They say "Is Pepsi okay?" I'm like "sure..." I mean really if I said no would they drive to a gas station to get me a Coke? Now that would be service.

Like in Arkansas and SoCal, in Indiana, everything was coke. Here in Ohio it's "pop." My dad always called it "soda pop" or, if he wanted to embarrass us, "sodie pop."

My friend Jay asked for a coke at a restaurant. The waiter asked him, "is Pepsi ok?" He said, "No, I want coke." The waiter was gone for a while, but when Jay looked out the window, he saw the waiter coming across from the gas station with a 20 oz. bottle of Coke.

That waiter got a huge tip.

I wnnt to know who in SoCal said soda--please, who did they interview. I'm just thankful that here in Louisiana, I'm back to a coke state. It might be the only good thing about Louisiana...

OK, I grew up in SoCal as well(L.A. in particular), but I've always called it "soda". I have no recollection of it generally being called "coke"!
